ChefsForChildren organizes a healthy cooking workshop for children with diabetes in Galicia

Santa Comba, A Coruña, February 24, 2025. – The renowned Michelin Star chefs Manuel Costiña, Mario Sandoval and Óscar Velasco have given a healthy cooking workshop specially designed for children affected by type 1 diabetes. Under the slogan “Eating healthy is fun”, ChefsForChildren is a solidarity initiative that celebrates its seventh edition with a firm commitment: to teach the importance of healthy eating from childhood and support the work of the DiabetesCEROFoundation .The workshop was held at the Retiro da Costiña restaurant and was attended by more than 20 children. The activity began with a special snack consisting of Joselito sandwiches and a very special ice cream from Casa del Gelato. Afterwards, while the children received their cooking caps and aprons, the four cooks introduced themselves and gave them the necessary instructions for the preparation of a delicious and healthy whole wheat pizza with different seasonal vegetables. Together they have prepared this recipe, designed and adapted to ensure a low glycemic impact. At the end, the children received a diploma and a surprise gift, thus closing a day in which haute cuisine, fun and social commitment have come together. To transmit the values of gastronomy and solidarity to the youngest children, ChefsForChildren brings together more than 60 Michelin-starred chefs in an initiative that in 2025 collaborates with DiabetesCERO, the leading Spanish foundation in research to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that mainly affects children and whose incidence continues to rise. Every year, between 1,200 and 1,500 children under 15 years of age are diagnosed in Spain, and 1 in 42 families live with this chronic condition.
From DiabetesCERO, its CEO, Sandra Campinas, highlighted that: “Type 1 diabetes is a life-changing disease for children and their families, but with education and support, we can help them manage it in a healthy way. Initiatives such as ChefsForChildren not only teach children to enjoy food safely, but also help to raise awareness of the importance of research to find a cure. DiabetesCERO is grateful for the commitment of these great chefs and all those who make this event possible”.
Pilar Candil, director of Lima Comunicación y Eventos, the organizing agency of this project, was thrilled: “ChefsForChildren is a responsible and large-scale event, and reaching its 7th edition is a source of great happiness. Having more than 60 chefs in solidarity shows that gastronomy is generous and never forgets those who need it most. Thanks to the involvement of chefs Manuel Costiña, Mario Sandoval and Óscar Velasco, as well as the Retiro da Costiña team, this year we have been able to bring this initiative to Galicia, giving children with diabetes an experience they will never forget. Together, we teach the little ones how to cook, inspire them and help them, consolidating this precious event, which grows every year as a big solidarity family”.
